![]() ![]() ![]() I suppose there are less gadgets to make way for Morphs, which I suppose it okay due to how powerful they are. It's really cool seeing these gadgets returning, though I'd like to see some new ones too, since it's only been old ones so far. I've gotten a bit further now, so here's some more thoughts:Īll the returning gadgets! The Speed Hoop, RC Car, High Flyer, Aqua Net, Monkey Radar. Including a "romance fortune" option, which much to my surprise, is gay and lesbian inclusive! ![]() This doesn't feel particularly relevant but it's a nice touch.įortune Telling is another new feature which is pretty cute. Fantasy Knight is very powerful, able to destroy enemies with ease and to capture multiple monkeys at once with a magic spell, but the power seems fairly balanced with the short duration and the fact you can't use gadgets while in that form.Īnother new addition I noticed is that monkeys can knock gadgets out of your hands and use them against you, as shown in the picture at the top of the page. Probably replacing some gadgets from the older games. This is a fantastic way to bring some depth to the combat and it looks like there are a lot of morphs you can use. These forms can only be used for 30 seconds but can be kept going by beating enemies or breaking objects. The first being a Fantasy Knight, which gives your character the ability to cast spells and have a magic shield that protects you from all attacks. Pretty early on I was greeted with a couple of new mechanics different from Ape Escape 2, by introducing the ability to "Morph" into different forms. it also encourages challenging yourself with Time Trials. Some of the monkey names seem like they are jokes for the Japanese which haven't translated over well, however.Īnother thing the series is good for is appealing to collectors, there are so many things to collect and unlock (monkeys included) and the game itself encourages replaying levels, since you can never catch all monkeys on a level in one attempt. By the third level there are already references to Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Lion King, Howl's Moving Castle (The name of the third level is Saru-Mon's (Immobile) Castle) and there were probably some more I've missed too. The plot of the game is pretty novel and I like the idea of monkeys taking over TV and making TV shows, as it is a great way to fit in some references. The left trigger is used for centering the camera. ![]() The X, Square, Triangle and Circle buttons are not used to attack, they are used to change gadgets, and you use said gadgets using the right analogue stick, giving you great control of how you swing a net, or your sword, or how you spin the radar to find monkeys. How unusual you ask? despite this being a 3D platformer of sorts, the jump button is somewhere it usually isn't, the right trigger (R2). And once I did, the controls instantly clicked with me all over again. It took me a minute to remember the controls of this game. The character designs are pretty terrible, but the game isn't really about the human characters, so I don't really care. Straight away i'm given the choice of a female or male character (shown above), which is a first for the series I believe. One of the best parts of these games, much like the LEGO games is that they have a great sense of humour and don't take themselves too seriously. anime this series is, in a bright, wacky "Saturday Morning Cartoon" kind of way. Currently, I have just beaten the first boss, White Monkey and here are my thoughts so far:įrom the very start I was hit with nostalgia of just how. So I've finally gotten around to playing it. (and of course I loved the cameo mini-game in Metal Gear Solid)Īnd that is where it ended for me, despite them being some of my favourite games ever, I forgot the franchise largely in my later teens, and it's only recently that I even discovered that there is an Ape Escape 3 (and more!) Ape Escape 2 is to this day, one of my favourite games of all time ( Which had one of my favourite boss battle themes of all time) I spent a good part of my childhood completely failing at the original Ape Escape, but loving it immensely. I've always been a big fan of the Ape Escape series. ![]()
